Riga is one of those European cities that feels surprisingly easy to enjoy. The Latvian capital combines Art Nouveau architecture, a compact Old Town, lively food markets, riverside walks and an excellent café scene, making it ideal for a long weekend.
If you’re planning your first trip, this guide covers the best things to do in Riga, where to spend your time, and how to make the most of two or three days in the city.
Riga at a glance
Best for: culture, architecture, food, couples, weekend breaks
Ideal stay: 2–3 days
Best time to visit: late spring to early autumn, plus December for Christmas markets
Getting around: mostly on foot, with trams and buses for longer distances

The Riga shortlist
If you only have a short time in the city, prioritise:
- Riga Old Town
- House of the Blackheads
- St Peter’s Church
- Riga Central Market
- Freedom Monument
- Art Nouveau district
- Swedish Gate
- Riga Castle
- Daugava riverfront
1. Explore Riga Old Town
Riga’s historic centre is compact enough to explore on foot and is the best place to begin a first visit.
Allow yourself time to wander rather than rushing between landmarks. You’ll find medieval streets, colourful façades, churches, cafés and small squares within a relatively small area.
Best for: first-time visitors, architecture, photography
Time needed: 2–3 hours
2. See the House of the Blackheads
The House of the Blackheads is one of Riga’s most recognisable buildings and one of the highlights of Town Hall Square.
Its ornate façade makes it one of the city’s best photo stops, but it is worth going inside as well if you enjoy history and architecture.
Best for: architecture, history, photography
3. Go up St Peter’s Church
For one of the best views across Riga, head to St Peter’s Church.
The tower gives you a panoramic view over the Old Town, the Daugava River and the city’s rooftops.
Try to visit when visibility is good.
Best for: city views, photography
Don’t miss: the tower viewpoint
4. Walk through the Swedish Gate
The Swedish Gate is one of Riga’s most charming historic details.
It is easy to include while walking through the Old Town and works particularly well as part of a relaxed route through the city’s medieval streets.
Best for: history, walking, photography
5. Visit Riga Central Market
Riga Central Market is one of the city’s most interesting places to experience local everyday life.
The market occupies enormous former Zeppelin hangars and is a great place to browse produce, baked goods, fish, meat and Latvian specialities.
Come hungry and allow time to explore more than one pavilion.
Best for: food, local culture, budget travellers
Time needed: 1–2 hours
6. Walk by Riga Castle and the Daugava River

Riga Castle sits beside the Daugava and makes a good stopping point during a riverside walk.
The riverfront is particularly pleasant when you want a break from sightseeing in the denser streets of the Old Town.
Best for: walking, views, slower travel
7. Discover Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture
Riga has one of Europe’s most impressive collections of Art Nouveau buildings.
For the best concentration, head towards Alberta iela and the surrounding streets.
Even if architecture is not normally the focus of your trips, this area is worth seeing because it feels very different from the medieval Old Town.
Best for: architecture, design, photography
8. Stop at the Freedom Monument
The Freedom Monument is one of Latvia’s most important national landmarks.
It sits between the Old Town and the city’s central boulevard area, so it is easy to include while walking between neighbourhoods.
Best for: history, culture

Where to stay in Riga
For a first trip, I would stay either:
Old Town — best for being close to the main sights.
Centrs — best for cafés, Art Nouveau architecture and a slightly more local feel.
Near the Central Market — convenient and often better value, though less atmospheric than the Old Town.
Practical tips for visiting Riga
Riga is very walkable, so comfortable shoes matter more than complicated transport planning.
Public transport is useful when travelling beyond the historic centre, but many visitors can see most major sights on foot.
Weather can change quickly, especially outside summer, so bring layers.
If you’re visiting during winter, daylight hours are much shorter, so plan outdoor sightseeing earlier in the day.
Is Riga worth visiting?
Yes. Riga works particularly well for travellers who like beautiful architecture, compact cities, good food and destinations that feel less hectic than Europe’s biggest capitals.
Two days is enough for the highlights, but three days gives you more time to enjoy the city without rushing.
